Default why cant I change the startup or the shutdown image on my MP

okay, so I found where the startup and shutdown commands are in the registry so I tried to change the images to something different.

the only problem is that I can never get it to work. its my understanding that both of these images are located in the "windows" folder on the phone, right?

so when I try to upload my own images (in GIF form), the images never stay in that folder. what I mean is that I can upload the pics but as soon as I close the "windows" folder and reopen it, the pics arent there anymore. I also noticed that the original pics in that folder are "read only" files. <--- exactly what does that mean?

am I to assume that the "windows" folder has some sort of file protection to where it wont allow you to either upload or delete any files from that particular folder?

someone help please...
