To my understanding (Jason, correct me if I'm wrong), the unique Zune tags only apply if you link your Zune to a Zune.net account. If you keep your Zune "offline", you can name it whatever you want, even if someone else is using it (it's a bit like "offline" gamertags on the Xbox 360). Well, that's the impression I got from
this page.
Actually, Microsoft has done a really poor job informing the public how Zune.net accounts and Zune tags work. Considering the region-specific issues that Jason has encountered, I have every intention of keeping my Zune "offline" when I set it up. I'm a little concerned that once you link your Zune to a Zune.net account, you won't be able to wipe that account off the Zune and link it to another. I want to have my Xbox Live and Zune.net accounts all under one roof, but if my concern is indeed true, then keeping it "offline" is my only option - until the Zune is officially released in Australia.
Jason, you should see if you can get some clarification on this issue when you meet Microsoft today. It would be extremely lame if Microsoft made Zune and Zune.net account linking irreversible.
