Default (ISSUE) USB/Activesync causes SMS to stop working

First, I guess, my system setup. Just bought a new phone, and the old one (original HTC Touch) did not have this symptom, phone being the only thing changed.

2 different computers, both running XP Pro.
ActiveSync 4.5.0 (Build 5096) on both machines
HTC Touch Pro 2 (purchased with WM6.5 already installed)

Seems to be an intermittent issue, doesn't happen all the time and doesn't happen every time I connect the phone. Sometimes the phone will work perfectly for hours on end, then I'll notice I haven't gotten an SMS in a while. When I unplug the mini-USB cable, about 15 seconds later the notification'll go off & I've suddenly got a stack of new messages.

I've tried while using JUST the phone's SMS functions.
I've tried with two PC passthrough SMS programs (Jeyo MC & Raspberry TrueConnectSMS) that allow sending/recieving SMS messages directly from a program on the desktop.

The issue doesn't seem to have a trigger that I can isolate. It's happened in all three of the above test scenarios.

Suggestions anyone?
