Default Some Issues With The Windows Mobile 6.1 SMTP Patch?

http://www.mobilejaw.com/thoughts/2...-email-accounts

First of all, let me say that I had no problems with the SMTP patch Microsoft released recently for Windows Mobile 6.1 devices, other than the sudden soft reset that happened without warning. We discussed it here. Fellow MVP Mike Temporale at MobileJaw had a different experience though.

"A number of news sites have been reporting about Microsoft releasing a patch that fixes an issue with sending email on your Windows Mobile 6.1 device. The patch is available from the Outlook Mobile team web site and claims to fix the problem. I'm sure it might do that, but there are a number of things that they fail to mention. So before you go and install this patch, read the issues below and weigh the decision to install or not."

He goes on to mention that email accounts were deleted (pictured above), the device restarted in flight mode and the sudden soft reset. As I said, the soft reset I experienced. I am 99% sure my device didn't come back up in flight mode and I know my 2 POP3 and 1 IMAP4 accounts were all unaffected by the update. Now, I have heard some other issues with the patch as well. Right here in our own forums, some witnessed the deletion of accounts and one said his email functionality was completely broken until the patch was uninstalled. I am interested in hearing the success rates and failures of those that have applied it, as well as how many of you aren't having an issue with email so have held off on applying the patch.

I had the exact same thing happen to me that happened to members "nycsmartphone" and Mike T.
Installed patch, all POP3 accounts disappeared from messaging list, but were shown on the home screen. I did not uninstall but I tried to do a "restore" using Sprite backup. No joy with the restore, I had the same issues (no POP3 accounts) BUT the ability to uninstall the patch was now gone because the patch was not listed under the "remove programs" menu anymore due to the restore.
I had to re-install the patch and the un-install the patch by going to "remove programs". After that, all my accounts showed back up and I did not need to re-create any of the accounts.

Default Email accounts missing after 6.l Patch

I experienced the same behavior on my Blackjack II that others have reported. My Exchange account remained intact, but my Gmail (imap) account disappeared. When I tried to add my Gmail account back, I received a message indicating that an account by that name already existed and I had to name the new one Gmail1 in order to complete the setup. However, after completing the setup, neither my Gmail nor Gmail1 accounts showed up. At that point, I decided to uninstall the patch and after I uninstalled it, both Gmail and Gmail1 accounts appeared. I then deleted the Gmail1 account in order to get back to the point I was at before installing the patch.

Same issue here with BJ II after running the patch. All my email accounts (POP3 and IMAP) disappeared from the messaging screen. Could still see them from the home screen, but clicking on them did nothing and they were completely unaccessible. As others did, I added new email accounts with the same result.

Ended up doing a hard reset on the phone (same one I did after installing WM 6.1) to start from scratch and redo everything. Haven't even thought about trying the patch again, I'd rather redo my email account everytime it breaks...

Default Wouldn't even install...

I'm running a customized 6.1 ROM from XDA-Developers and I couldn't even get it to install. The CAB came back with 'Cannot be installed on this version of the Operating System.."

Hmmmm, I know the ROM is built from a MS-provided core... I wonder if only certain versions of the O/S have the problem???

Don, I ran into the same message when trying to install the patch on the customized ROM I use. I did find the following blurb on http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook_mobile/default.aspx
"It only applies to Windows Mobile 6.1.1 through 6.1.3. Windows Mobile 6.1.4 and later are already fixed."

So, stupid question regarding the About screen: I am guessing I am running 6.1.4? The About screen says "Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional CE OS 5.2.20755 (Build 20755.1.4.0)"

No idea... hopefully, we're running a 6.1.4 or later (maybe that .1.4.0 at the end of the Build?), not a 6.1.0...

Default Intermittant Gmail Issue

Last week after I installed the only problem I experienced was that I would get a connection error when I did a send/receive. I haven't noticed it happening this week so this may be unrelated.

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing too, .1.4.0 in the build means 6.1.4

Gotta love it when a new version or build of an OS or program comes out but it's never publicized...

That's what I love about XDA Developers. I don't know how they do it (I suspect they rip them out of manufacturer-supplied ROMs), but they seem to get their hands on the latest and greatest OS cores from MS.

WRT supplying upgrades to users -- you gotta remember MS's model for Windows Mobile -- it's basically an 'embedded' O/S, one that you give to the manufacturers/vendors to put into their hardware. It's not a 'public' O/S like Windows where you distribute upgrades and fixes via Microsoft Update.
