Since the public unveiling of the HTC Shift many months ago, geeks and gadget lovers around the world have breathed a collective cry of "oohs" and "aahs" without even knowing the specs... because you know, that's what geeks and gadget lovers love to do. I was looking forward to this when the rumor was that WM6 was included. Seemed like the perfect compromise between a small PC and large PPC. However, now that the non-PC part is severely crippled, I'll pass.
Maybe the Shift II will include both OS's so we can use the WM part for on-the-go, instant-on, battery saving usage, and boot into Vista when we want the full PC experience and are close to a charger. I'm sure there are all sorts of integration issues that make that solution difficult to obtain, but it seems as though the toughest part is already done-- syncing of email, contacts and calendar.

How crippled is it ?
Does anyone know how much of the WM06 / snapvue (.. call it what you will) part is actually useable ??
Particularly, if you have a 3rd party app that does your push email / PIM work (in our case Commontimes nMotes for Lotus Notes), how will that be installed and work ??
I'm confused :?

Hmmm. I don't about that. I had a Sony 380N that was 1.3ghz speed and 1gb memory and it ran Vista barely sufficient.
But 800mhz and 1gb? That sounds painful.

Most likely you are correct, but unfortunately, it's not so easy to compare CPU performance these days. The clock speed alone doesn't mean anything because performance is based more on the CPU architecture. So the clock speed only is useful when comparing CPUs within the exact same family.
Still, if I consider getting one of these (less likely now that I have a family to spend my money on :wink  , I think I would run Windows XP Tablet on it instead to squeeze out the maximum performance.

I believe HTC are considering that option.

Okay, NOT considering the built-in communication options, is this currently the best choice for a UMPC shopper? I don't think so. It strikes me that if you wanted the UPC form factor and performance, you'd be better off getting something else and pairing that with a 3G handset.
Thoughts?

Agreed, I am looking at OQO O2. Let's see what feedback on Shift is going to be when it goes on sale. That would help with final decision.

I'd be more impressed if the pics of the screen weren't pasted onto the images with obviously much worse compression artifacts.
