Default Wi-Fi suggestions?

So now I own three (Count em' 3) Compaq and HP iPAQs, two of them, the 5455 and 5555, with built-in Wi-Fi. Sometimes it works very well and then sometimes, often wit the same signal, it's frustratingly SLOW.

Can anyone give me some hints as to how I get get the most from my Wi-Fi connections.
