Default Oodles of T-Mobile Wing Reviews!

The T-Mobile Wing is officially available in the US starting today, and a ton of sites have published reviews. Hit one of the links below if you're interested. (Has anyone picked one up and want to share their experiences?)

Here's my quick review (from previous thread):

PROS (aside from Windows Mobile 6 standard features):

- Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 comes STANDARD!
- Keyboard feels great and is much easier to type on. The spring-loaded mechanism works really well.
- Overall performance is better than MDA
- Speakers sound more "stereo-like"
- Feels more solid overall

CONS:

- MAJOR: The Wing's microphone doesn't seem to work well. Using Microsoft Voice command is more difficult because the Wing has a harder time understanding me. I'm frustrated by this.

- With VoiceCommand 1.6, when using a bluetooth headset, incoming call announcements are announced IN the call :evil:. In other words, if I'm talking to someone using my bluetooth headset and another call comes in, I hear the computer-generated voice OVER the person I'm talking to through the headset, and the person at other end can actually hear VoiceCommand announcing the call, too. It's really annoying because it just abruputly interrupts your conversation. VoiceCommand 1.5 (and earlier) never did this. VC1.5 always announced calls through the phone's own speaker when your headset was already in use. They need to fix this!!!

- When calls come in, the on-screen indicator takes a couple of seconds to appear. The phone will ring right away but it seems to take longer to see who's calling. I'm going to try overclocking my Wing to see if this makes a difference.

- Inability to remove "T-zones" from the Start menu. I never use t-zones!

- Since I lock my device using a 4-digit pin, typing in the complete unlock pin does NOT automatically unlock the phone. Now, you have to type in the pin, THEN tap "Unlock" button. It worked easier on the MDA when I could just quickly punch in the pin and it would automatically return me to home page.

- It'd be nice if they kept the IE and mail buttons on the top-front of the Wing like the MDA. I'm aware the mail icon was moved to the side, but it was convenient having these extra hardware buttons on the front. Now there's only the Windows and OK button.

- Another minor inconvenience is the movement of the USB port from the right-side to the left. It's more difficult using the keyboad when connected to a USB cable (car charger for example) sticking out of the left. But I suppose when NOT using the keyboard with a USB cable plugged in it makes more sense to be at the bottom. I still prefer the MDA's usb port location.

- Having the added bass to the speakers makes listening to Microsoft VoiceCommand confirmations a little more difficult. I wonder if there's a way to control the treble/bass...

A few new features I've noticed:

- Phone turns on automatically when keyboard is opened
- Holding down the red phone button automatically locks the device

With all the cons believe it or not I'm still pleased with the Wing and prefer it over the MDA, but the biggest problem is the poor microphone performance due to the location of the mic. I use Microsoft VoiceCommand regularly and it doesn't work as well as it did on the MDA with version 1.5. I also wish the speakers were louder, but it's about the same as on the MDA.

That's my quick review.

I'm liking it, but I'd also like to see Voice Command patched.

@ eriqc Voice command now works from the headset so if you use your headset's voice dial function it will hand control over the VC on the Wing.

Default Where to buy?

Hi all,

Has anyone seen an unlocked version available from a retailer yet or is it only available direct from T-Mobile? I want to get an unlocked version for use in Australia

The unlocked version would be the HTC P4350 (Herald). Since you're in Australia, check out Dopod's version (C800).

The reason i was after the T-Mobile version is:

1) it looks better than the HTC & Dopod versions
2) It has Windows Mobile 6

Looks like it's ebay time...

Well, I can't say which device looks better. That's purely subjective. But are you aware that (looks at sig) your 838 Pro will receive an official Windows Mobile 6 upgrade in July?

I 'm always looking to see if I should switch phones (and carriers)...

With the hype surrounding the Wing and a few other new phones like it, lately I'm happier and happier with my Hermes.

These reviews for the Wing make it feel like only a marginal upgrade from T-Mobile's older offerings. The AT&T 8525 (with the new ROM!) seems superior, and it's almost a year old:
3g;
Faster Processor;
NOT blue;

WM6 doesn't sway me.

Glad I've got the 8525!

I assume color doesn't sway you either, but the blue is actually much darker in normal lighting conditions. It almost looks black most'uv the time. But more of a dark mid-night blue. I wasn't too thrilled about the blue from the pics, but I like it after using it in person. I realize that most pics you see online involved a flash which make it appear much brighter/blue-er (if that's a word lol)
