Default Asus Announces Free Windows Mobile 6 Upgrades

http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=7195

And the free Windows Mobile 6 upgrades just keep on coming - this time, courtesy of the folks at Asus. Come July, said upgrades will be released for the A639, A626, A686, A696, P535, and P735. Unfortunately, that's about all the information we have to work with at this present moment, although you can probably expect additional details as that magical month approaches.

Default Too cool...

This is so great - Asus and Dopod are offering free upgrades to Windows Mobile 6 for select model in their product lines.

I am so excited. Last time I looked (admittedly, I live in the hinterlands) you could not find these PocketPCs available at any local retailer.

What's more, why are these manufacturers offering free updates, and there's no word from our domestic (Dell, HP, etc.) purveyors of PDAs???

Congrats to you Dopod and Asus users, you are truly visionaries. You knew something didn't you?

According to Dell, my Dell Axim x51v with Win Mobile 5 does not need an update (it does what they designed it to do) and they know best - don't they?

you bet and not only Dell that thinks so. Last time I tried to raise class action to get our free WM6 I was flamed on Aximsite by few users. Some powerful users of Dells insist on X51 not having WM6 upgrade ! Can you imagine ?!

I love my HP 6900 series, but I curse HP for not giving us WM6!

Let me say this about that - as an x50v user, knowing how bad the horrible PPC 2003 Second Edition to Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade went, from an end user perspective - I can appreciate that x51 and x51v users might not want to dip their toes in the upgrade pool again.

The top end Axims are not throw away devices - an upgrade plan should be offered and the fact that some second tier manufacturers can do it - and do it quickly would tend to bode well, one might think.

The problem is Dell (obviously). Microsoft could create a lot of goodwill here by prepping the ROM images with the necessary tweeks for Dell Axims, and supply them at a nominal cost to Dell users.

Oops - sorry, pressed the button one too many times on my morphine drip.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks don't realise that the WM5 to WM6 upgrade path is hardly as rough as the WM2003 to WM5 one. If Dell really wanted to botch it, they'd have to move heaven and earth to do so.

Default Insights praised and corporate disregard

As usual, Darius has provided an insight that I lacked in my original posting. My praise to Mr. Wey for keeping us informed, and doing it in a respectful way.

As one who endured the trials and tribulations of the Axim x50v's long, painful march to a stable installation of Windows Mobile 5, I can tell you from personal experience that I would not want to go through that again.

So, I now have an Axim x50v running the A02 rom image and it's for sale.

I really wanted an Axim x51v and purchased it just before the discontinuation of the Axim line was announced. I continue to hope for a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade - preferably free, but I would pay for it - if it comes to that. I also hope that it will be a smoother installation process.

My x51v plays well with my Vista Ultimate PC using the WMDC - so far (knocks wood) no problems.

What do you say Dell? Come on, do the right thing!

Default Hello there

Because of this annoucement I just went and ordered the 639 1gig PPC.
On Tuesday it should arrive. Hope it will be as good as my DellX5 I will be moving from.

WM6 looks great. Can't wait to try it out.
How easy will the upgrade be? just download a setup file and run it?
