Default Lock It Down! Spb Kiosk Updated!

"Spb Software House, the leading Pocket PC software developer, announces the release of Spb Kiosk 4.0, a new version of the famous enterprise-oriented application. Pocket PC is a feature rich device with many built-in programs, games, multimedia features and so one. However, in the enterprise world most of these features are not needed and very often must be disabled. The main goal of Spb Kiosk is to lock Pocket PC to applications required by an enterprise, thus converting a generic Pocket PC device into a specialized business tool. Spb Kiosk proved to be a reliable solution used by more than 250 big companies worldwide, including Microsoft, HP, Shell, UPS and others. New version brings Spb Kiosk to a new technology level. It uses advanced low-level techniques to work with system drivers and to intercept API calls. Now a device administrator has true control over applications running on the devices: only explicitly allowed executables can be started. This technology effectively prevents all known attacks like using remote tools, malicious programs started via memory card autorun etc. New version makes it possible to fine-tune access to device settings and even define allowed web pages in Internet Explorer."

Got pesky users you need to control? Got pesky guests who want to play with your Pocket PCs at your tradeshow booth? Sure you want them to play with your application, but they seem to want to play games. Want to lock them down to just what you want - minimizing damage, maximizing potential? Check out the latest version of Kiosk!

We actually recommend SPB to our corporate customers who are looking for application-locking to secure the enterprise. It is a great product, and a good part of a layered security approach.

However, we always warn them with the caveat that Windows Mobile security is still totally and easily owned, and most every 3rd party security app or native security feature (including code signing) is easily bypassed. It's just the current state of the OS, which will hopefully improve in WM6 and beyond. It seems there is a lot of misinformation/misunderstanding out there about WM security. You can still do an enterprise rollout; just know what you're getting into and plan accordingly

FYI, Seth Fogie will be speaking on WM security at the RSA security conference in San Francisco next week. If anyone here is going to be at RSA, let's get together and hang out. I know some good sushi places!

I love Spb products,... I use them all the time.

I like this software. However, for someone like myself that only has an "Enterprise" of 6 total handhelds,... is there a cheaper solution?

$495 to purchase this solution is a bit much for my organization to swallow for only 6 units.

What other options are out there for me to control my staff from messing with the way these units are set up? Is there something cheaper or even free?
