ACCESS Debuts NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC
"ACCESS CO., LTD announced today that it will introduce an English-language version of "NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC Rev. 2.0.0", the companys image viewing software for Windows Mobile for Pocket PC. The product will debut in the U.S. in mid-December 2006. An updated Japanese-language version with increased functionality will be launched in Japan simultaneously. The NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC runs with Sony Corporation's LocationFree software and enables users to view TV programs and video content from various locations even outside the home via an Internet connection. Users can operate and view TVs and devices such as DVD recorders on their Pocket PCs as if they were at home. In addition to supporting images from external devices such as DVD recorders and video cameras, the NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC Rev. 2.0.0 also features advanced remote functionality, which allows users to operate external devices through a screen and play-back, stop, or fast-forward. This new software supports Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, and uses an MPEG4 picture decoder from Techno Mathematical Co., Ltd."

Sling, move over. There's a new placeshifting client in town that takes advantage of Sony's LocationFree. I've not yet tried ACCESS' offering, though those who have tried it have provided some positive feedback, so it's one worth considering if SlingPlayer Mobile isn't an option for you. A copy can be purchased for just under $20 from our affiliate software store; alas, no trial version is available.

Sling move over? Why? Have you ever tried LocationFree? It doesn't even come close to Sling. Picture quality is worse, the UI is terrible, it doesn't support as many remote codes and it's more expensive.

I think you read into "move over" a little too much. It was a general phrase used to signify that room should be made for another placeshifting solution. Bear in mind that not everyone has access to Sling in their country, so this is a worthy alternative.

Although I do have to agree on th UI, I have not seen a problem with quality. I have used SlingBox as well. The big catcher for me was support across all platforms I use including the PSP. When around the home, I connect to the Player over WiFi since it has WiFi built in.
As for price, I paid $199 for the LocationFree Player with PC client, $40 for the Mac Client, $20 for the Pocket PC client, and the PSP client was free. So this seems all within reason if comparing to the SlingBox pricing model.
$179 for the SlingBox
PC Client Free (not sure on this)
Mac Client in Beta
$30 for the Pocket PC Client
No PSP Client
It's just nice to have options.

- TV tuner (supported models $100 and up)
- Orb FREE!
- Cost of clients Free!* You might have purchased a browser or media player....
