Wifi Enabled HDD Enclosure: Any Takers?
A Singapore company is developing a new wifi HDD enclosure. So what's new, you may ask? It's designed to be portable, with a rechargeable battery that would give it up to 2-4hrs of continuous access time - which is really good if they can actually do it. I can't quite make out if this can function as a wireless AP, but the company claims up to 8 people can wirelessly access the HDD at the same time. The device is compatible with any device on the 802.11b/g standards, and will take any IDE/ATA HDD in 1.8" or 2.5" form factors. The projected retail launch date will be in early April, but now news yet on price or availability. So, any takers?

Cool! I've beeen waiting for such a thing - Asus' Wi-Fi access point + enclosure is far more akward to use in mobile environments (no battery etc)

This would be cool indeed.
But I'm a little sceptical that this will ever come to life. There is a discussion about this disk on XDA Developers from spring, and at that time the launch was scheduled for summer 2006...

If that fails...We could....do what the Nintendo gamers did....Raise a bounty on whose first to hack the WiFi on a Zune....
It is after all a battery operated HDD with WiFi and a buncha media playing capabilities thrown in

Interesting idea, although I'm not sure just how useful it would be. I suppose if you really like to avoid wires and for some reason aren't willing to do Bluetooth, it could be just what you need.

I have the ASUS WL-HDD. I had power wired to the trunk of my car. I put the ASUS in the trunk and send music to my iPAQ 4700 up front, which I play through the car stereo. It works well. I haven't had a need to use it where I didn't have power, but if I did, I could see this drive enclosure being useful. I can even GPS via Bluetooth (iGuidance) and play music via WiFi (MortPlayer) at the same time. The iPAQ sits in a Proclip powered mount, so I have no dangling car adapters.
Are there easier ways to get music to my car stereo? I'm sure there are (iPod, Zune, etc.). But my setup is one of those W?BIC things.

Currently there is no way to add 20 or 30Gb of storage to WM device (with exception of Loox and other devices with USB host) and use this storage on the go.
There are no BT external drives and the only Wireless is one from Asus that doesn't have battery for real portability...

nice.. but I'm look for a nice NAS device to hold my 200gB drive for access from my Mac, Laptop, and PPC.

It might be nice if the next iPod (the "true" video iPod everyone's waiting for) will come with Wi-Fi access.
I'm thinking 160-200GB with a 2.5" drive, or maybe 80-100GB with a 1.8" drive?
As an iPod, it would be beautiful and functional other than as a storage medium...
