Default Viewsonic Releases A Trio Of Rugged PDAs

http://www.viewsonic.com/companyinf...ss_release=1554

"ViewSonics newly designed V38r-06, V38r-07 and V38r-07a rugged handheld devices are specifically built to meet mobile computing demands across a variety of industries, including retail, public safety, healthcare and military. The palm-sized devices offer features like Bluetooth^ , GPS tracking and 802.11b/g wireless communications to provide inventory consultants with a PC device that can be accidentally dropped from a store shelf and remain functioning to complete the stores inventory tracking."

This bunch has interesting specs - GPS, 802.11b/g, BT, barcode scanner, and USB host, with the top-end model sporting a 1.3MP camera and 128MB RAM - and all of them have rugged casings (IP54 standard with shades of HP's Jornada line in the styling) and are VOIP ready as well. Get this though - they're also all running WM2003. I can just imagine the problems everybody's going to have with alarms and reminders on these babies. And if you're still interested, the retail price ranges from US$1,999 to US$1,599 8O I can't imagine that the differences between WM2003 and WM5 licensing costs are that much that they have to go with the older OS (and it's not even WM2003SE). You can view the detailed specs for the V38r-07/07a here, and for the V38r-06 here.

Well, it's a little cheaper than Symbol's MC7094, but Symbol's device runs Windows Mobile 5.0, has a significant chunk of flash (64MB as persistent storage, plus I think 16MB user-accessible), and has either a numeric or a QWERTY keyboard, plus a choice of laser or 2D imaging barcode scanner. No camera, though.

The fingerprint reader looks vaguely interesting but is probably about as secure as most laptop readers, i.e. not very.

Considering total lack of customer support ViewSonic showed in it's previous foray in the PDA market -V35/36/37 - this is not likely to be a good investment.
