Default Treo 700wx is Official, and is Reviewed

The worst-kept secret is no longer a secret: the 700wx is official and is featured both on Palm's and Sprint's sites. As previously suggested, the two main differences between the 700w and the 700wx is the additional RAM and tethering support via USB or Bluetooth.

A number of reviews are also starting to crop up, including both MobileTechReview and LAPTOP Magazine. If only Sprint had good coverage where I need it... for those of you who are in good Sprint coverage, the unit will set you back $499 with a contract.

Default On the Mobile Tech Review page, there is an ad for VZWs Treo

Do you think that's just bad ad placement or was someone just really having a fun day?

Honestly $499? For no more than double the memory? I think I'll wait until VZW starts carrying the WX (if they do) and then make a lost claim. $50 is still less than $499.

Geesh, $499?

One real question though? Janak, you say you're in NY? I work/live in NY, work in Manhattan, live in Brooklyn, where is the coverage bad? I'm curious because I'm thinking of switching to Sprint.

TIA

Is the size any different from the old Treo?

I looked at a Treo next to a Motorola Q at a Verizon store recently and thougt the Treo seemed just massive. I can't fathom why they didn't put a touchscreen/word/excel on the Q since that made it a non-starter for me, but the Q's size was just great.

Yea, what a good way to take advantage of your insurance

And when will you people learn? Yea the unit costs more upfront, but when unlimited EVDO only costs $15/month on sprint versus the $40-45 on verizon, well that adds up to quite a bit of savings over a 2 yr contract. Even when using the questionable use of insurance, you'll recover the cost of the phone in 13 months. Use a more realistic number like $300 vs. Sprint's price of $450, well you'll make up the difference in about 5 months time. And if you have a SERO plan....

please quit justifying CDMA carriers ridiculous handset prices. when people are browsing faster on Cingulars HSDPA network for $20 AND getting cheap handsets, it just makes Sprint and verizon look dumb.

Sprint is rather weak in my home on the north shore of Long Island (and T-Mobile is even worse). If and when I move into the city, I'll probably reevaluate my carrier choices.

In the city proper, each carrier has its strong and weak spots, so you have to try it out. For the most part, every carrier has very strong signals on the streets, but building coverage varies. Verizon generally fares a bit better because 800MHz propagates deeper into buildings as opposed to 1900MHz, but this is not universally the case, as antenna location has an effect.

The Treo is narrower but thicker. It feels very good in the hand. (And no, the 700wx is physically identical to the 700w.)

It was designed from the ground-up to be a Blackberry competitor, including the lack of a touchscreen. In addition, one needs to worry less about screen protection when a screen is not touch-oriented.

When Cingular covers their entire network with HSDPA then we can compare it to Verizon and when Sprint matches Verizons EVDO then we will talk further.
