Cornice Wows the Crowd With a 12GB Mobile Hard Drive

Cornice's latest 12GB one-inch mobile drive is available at just $85 a pop. You know, if there were manufacturers out there willing to include one of these in a PDA, that extra $85 is something I (and I'm sure many others) would be willing to swallow. Hello? HTC, HP, Dell? Are you reading this?

I would do it in a heartbeat. I've started to enjoy having music on my PPC and playing it through my car and headset but I'm finding that a 2GB SD card doesn't really hold that many songs.

My sentiments exactly - in my case its movies. I've got an 8GB microdrive (ah...the joys of having a CF slot) in mine and it's almost always nearly full.

In the olden days manufactures would need to multiply a component cost 4 times in order to make a profit. If this still holds true, this would add $300.00 to the retail price. Does anyone know what the normal multiplier is today??

would today's battery [or power] technology be able to juice up a device with this hdd on [plus the usual wireless goodies like wifi and bt and maybe even cellular wireless like gsm/umts/edge]? if so put in on the next generation of devices! if not, then i think battery technology should catch up.

Right. Don't forget, though, that the target market is ODMs/OEMs, where such a high volume purchase is typical. It's the manufacturers that pop these drives into the devices, not the end-users.

Yes, battery technology has a long way to go. The power and complexity of devices has really boomed over the past few years, yet batteries have only received marginal improvements. Methinks it's time to divert R&D resources elsewhere for a while.

I too enjoy my 8GB HDD and can pop it out and put in my 5GB HDD or any other Type I/II CF device. I'm looking forward to getting my next CF HDD. I also enjoy the dual slots. I can stick in my SD card from my camera, or anyone elses, and copy the pictures to my CF HDD. I just hope in the next generation of PPC's that they don't build the HDD into the device, but instead, keep providing the card slot so I can upgrade to new devices as I choose.

sadly i think dual slot ppc's are a dying breed  but it would be nice to have dual slots even if it is 2 SDIOs or 1 SDIO and 1 miniSD, if they do decide to have dual slots they should atleast have one with the most number of accessories and capacity [like CF or SDIO i'd go with SDIO simply because it is smaller so the device will not be so big and i think SDIO will eat up less power], the hp hw65xx series had dual slots but it came out at a time when wm5 was announced and still had wm2003se on it.
