Default How-To Guide on Data Transfer between Palm and Pocket PC Devices

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in...1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

"PDA owners, let them be Palm or Pocket PC users (or both), often ask me how files can be transferred between Pocket PC and Palm OS devices. As no one has ever written a full (concerning all the possible scenarios for example, the two most prevalent Pocket PC Bluetooth stacks - and third-party programs the two SoftIck applications on Palm OS) roundup of all these questions, I took the liberty to write one myself."

Interesting article. I didn't realize this process of changing PDA platforms could be such a headache. If you're considering a move from Palm to a Pocket PC, this article provides some rather detailed instructions and options. Anyone been down this path recently? Let us know what it took for you to migrate to your new device.

Transferring files is a necessity and most of us have learned a lot of tricks over the years to accomplish this from ir/bt transfers to email and card swapping.

What I would really like to see is the ability to easily (one click) transfer text clipboard contents between ppc's and pc's... preferably to a top down "collector file" on the destination device using whatever connection is available so the transferred info is available on the other end when needed.

There have been a few instances where I have had files that useable on both my Palm and my Pocket PC devices:

- native Word and Excel files
- eReader e-books
- HanDBase database files

The easiest thing that I've found has been to simply take the Palm-formatted SD card out of my Palm devices, and put it into the SD slot on my Pocket PC. The Pocket PC (a Dell Axim x50v,) has been able to copy and move files to and from the Palm SD card. Unfortunately, the reverse is not true, as my Palm Treo 650 can't read the SD card that has been formatted for my Pocket PC.

It's not this complicated as I use both and have migrated many times. There are software like CompanionLink and XTNDConnect that do the job easily. Of course, when it comes to dbases and special programs -- it depends on whether or not there is one available for the other device. Most devices an import / export compatible file formats.

I just had to clear off my Palm Desktop AND PalmOS devices because I needed a fresh install (I've used a Palm since 1995... so it's my 4th, I believe) and it was easy putting it back together again. The biggest pain was the categories.

My PPC and PalmOS devices play together nicely. I'm about to upgrade to a new PPC -- so we'll see how it goes.

Yup. Please note that the article mostly discusses after-migration time issues like sending a Word doc to a Palm (or vice versa), sending individual calendar etc. records etc.
