MS Office Apps STILL Don't Play Nicely Together!!

I know there are a lot of you who probably know how to do what I just spent hours trying to accomplish, but would somebody PLEASE tell me why it is so difficult to, say, import Excel data into Calendar?!?!?
The menus SAY you can do it. The field mapping IMPLIES you can do it. But it ain't straightforward. Excel spreadsheets have to be meticulously formatted, with range names, etc. CSV-based transfer requires STOOPID formatting of the data...
And, of course, when the import doesn't work correctly, there are no error messages; it just makes you THINK it worked, but it doesn't work, and you don't know it didn't work until you go through and check to see if it worked..... [pant, pant, pant]

And, I think what makes me the most angry is that I KNEW I could have entered the data manually in about fifteen minutes, but I was NOT going to let Bill win! Not AGAIN!! BWAAAHHHAAAAAAA!!!!!
