Default MOBILE TV: CyberLink Demonstrates DVB-H TV Solution for Mobile Devices

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3002

"CyberLink, well known for its digital home solutions, recently unveiled its CyberLink DVB-H TV Solution for accessing broadcast TV content via mobile devices. The announcement reveals the extension of CyberLink's leading digital TV expertise for the PC, to include playback of video and TV entertainment via handheld devices such as PDAs and smartphones. CyberLink is currently demonstrating its latest solution at the Taipei International Digital Electronics Show."

Arne at the::unwired is happy to speculate that they were demonstrating this capability using a Windows Mobile-powered Pocket PC. I'm just happy getting my Orb and Media Center PC setup so I can let my kids watch DragonTales on my Treo 700w without having to walk around with hundreds of megabytes occupying my SD card. With more effort in getting everything streaming nowadays, it'll be interesting to see how all are bandwidth gets pushed to its limits. I can hear Verizon and Cingular just cringing now...

so how exactly does this technology work? Is it like the old analog antenna tv, or is it another sort of radio within the pda/phone that receives the signal? Does it stream it over the internet?

DVB-H is based on DVB-T which is terrestrial broadcast over antenna:

DVB-H is like terrestrial digital TV (DVB-T) except they've made the resolution more suitable for handheld screens and their processors to handle. DVB-H is also designed to "support" the doppler effect better, i.e. you should be able to watch TV better on the (oh no, don't do this at home kids!) highway or on a (high speed) train. As usual YMMV with that feature. Furthermore, DVB-H is better way of watching TV than video streaming via 3G, in case you are wondering, and might be better (in some cases) than streaming video over the internet also.
