Default Samsung Patents Virtual Screen and Pen Input Interface

http://tinyurl.com/njm8k

"Disclosed is a device and method for inputting characters or drawings on a mobile terminal using a virtual screen. To input characters or drawings through a virtual screen, the mobile terminal includes an electronic pen, a virtual screen generator, a position detector for detecting the electronic pen position, and a character recognition algorithm for recognizing a trail as a character. When a signal is input from the electronic pen, the mobile terminal detects the originating position of the signal and its trail. The mobile terminal recognizes the detected trail as a character and generates a virtual screen with the recognized character."

i.Tech Virtual Keyboard - you're not alone. Samsung has just been granted a patent for a virtual screen and pen input interface that can be integrated into PDAs and Smartphones (or just about any mobile terminal, as the patent application puts it). It's an interesting concept, though we think that while using it, it's best to exercise caution. You don't want your school teacher to mistake you for graffiti tagging the table with that fancy pen of yours.

I'm excited by this and the mobile projector announced a day por two ago. Not for what these specific gadgets are, but for what they suggest might be possible in the future. A pocket-sized device that can project a high-res touch-screen on any convenient surface would be fantastic for the travelling worker.

This together with the virtual keyboard would make my PDA as easy to use as my laptop. I was never able to master typing with a stylus, Fitaly or such things even though I've read here of 50-70 wpm with either one. I would always drag my laptop around even if I only had to take notes at a meeting. After using a qwerty keyboard for 25 years Fitaly always came up Greek to me. Calligrapher along with phatnotes/pad has been my main means of input on my PDA for the past couple of years and if this would work as well as Calligrapher does then I could see leaving my laptop home (a little more often).
