Windows Vista: Delayed for Consumers Until January 2007
"Microsoft Corp. today confirmed that Windows Vista, the next generation of the Windows client operating system, is on target to go into broad consumer beta to approximately 2 million users in the second quarter of 2006. Microsoft is on track to complete the product this year, with business availability in November 2006 and broad consumer availability in January 2007."
Nobody likes delays. I know that quite a few of you were willing to wait until the release of Windows Vista (previously, second-half of 2006) before purchasing a new PC, but with broad consumer availability now officially pushed back until January 2007, this may be a time for reconsideration. Are any of you in that position?

Vista and the new PC
Actually I'm running the Vista beta right now with a dual core 64bit Pentium... absolutely fantastic experience aside from the fact I cannot get drivers for half my devices... bottom line... no reason to wait to get hardware because what is out there today runs this OS like a champ. Besides we all know there is nothing like the smell of new hardware in the morning!
Now if I could only get a Pocket PC in the Origami form-factor with WM5 battery life I would be a happy camper!

I was planning on a new "Conroe" system with Vista in December.
I guess it's January now.

I'm hoping an updated Vista beta comes out in next months TechNet Plus. The last one I received was the December build, and it's dog slow on my P4 3GHz, 512MB RAM. (I know the RAM is probably a limiting factor, but geesh.) The Feb build was supposed to be a lot snappier from what I've heard.
This really has no bearing on deployment, for me at least. I'll load up the release on my workstation and get to know it, but the clients won't get it installed until at least the first service pack. I haven't decided if the home system will get a hardware upgrade this year to get it up to speed so it could run Vista efficiently. It's about time for one (but I rarely use my system at home after working on computers all day).
And regarding the poster who said it flies on his/her system, I would think most things would fly on a dual core 64bit Pentium chip. :roll:

<grin>Did I mention the 2 Gig of fast RAM? Also worth noting... I am running the Feb CTP which is much better behaved than the Dec CTP. Vista really responds nicely to duel core. I'm running a duel core on one of my laptops too and the 32bit version of Vista is almost as nice on it.

The holiday season will still be there - Vista just won't be there with it. 
I was going to wait for Vista to get a new notebook but now I'm not so sure. It's only a couple of months more but it already felt like an eternity. I'll probably end up getting something this summer (Turion X2, perhaps?).

My PC is on its last legs (both creaky hardware and ever creakier OS and application installation) and I was holding out for Vista, since I think a fresh install is by far the best option (and also because it would give me more time to save some money).
Now I don't think I'll be able to wait that long.
But first I'm going to have a holiday.
Extra points for the imaginative use of the expression "on target" in a paragraph about delaying the rollout to consumers (by starting with a sentence about the Beta). Accentuating the positive and all that.

And you are really believing Jan of 2007 :lol: This is a M$ major rev... come on where have you guys been for the past 10 years. SP1 for Vista might even be out before the actual OS. Jan 2007...oh yea :lol: :lol: :lol:
