Default Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Standard Abandoned; Bluetooth SIG Unfazed

For those of you who don't know, the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) had planned on adopting the forthcoming Ultra-Wideband "standard" in order to bump up their data transmission speeds from the currently paltry 768Kbps into the Ethernet-like 100-200Mbps range. Well it appears that the white flag has been waived regarding the standard as there were just too many agendas between vested parties (any of you surprised?). This doesn't appear to be a big deal to the Bluetooth SIG though. They'll just wait and decide for themselves what is the best standard from the variety of different UWB flavors that are sure to hit the market.

...and the beat goes on! :|

I just love how the Bluetooth SIG takes everything in stride. First they ignore the threat of competition from UWB (and wireless USB, for that matter), then they plan on incorporating it into their specifications, and now that UWB lacks an official standard, they're just going to use whichever faction's variant is most widely adopted. All this after the minor adjustments of Bluetooth 1.2 and paltry speed increase of 2.0 EDR, too! I've never called a standards organization steadfast before now, but I can think of no more fitting word here.

Maybe for a sound reason if one agrees w/ this authors thoughts...

" The ( Bluetooth ) SIG has been taking a PR caning for the last four years, mostly from bleeding-edge fans who wanted to see faster, longer range technology. The SIG has simply refused to be rushed; it's taken the view that what the market wants is a stable standard, not something which makes exciting headlines for a day, but puzzles retailers for a year.
