Default Acer Pocket PC Phones Expected in the Second Half of 2006

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20051227A7028.html

"Acer plans to venture into the PDA phone market in the second half of 2006, with its smart handheld devices built with CPUs and flash memory chips from Samsung Electronics and running on Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system, according to company sources. Acer's first PDA phone will be a 3G-enabled model, and the company will launch the model in the second half of next year when the market for 3G handsets is more mature, the sources noted."

Serving as a follow-up to this bit of news back in June, DigiTimes has reported that Acer's batch of Pocket PC Phone Edition devices can be expected in the second half of 2006. The company's products might not be huge in North America, but across Europe and the Asia-Pacific, they're doing a mighty fine job. They've managed to captivate many people with the n300 series and they just might do the same with their upcoming phone-enabled devices.

When PDA phones sport 3G connections and a 3.5"+ VGA screen to take advantage of these screens, they can be said to replace dual-device solutions. Until then, an integrated device gets you the privelege of losing both phone and PDA when it breaks, and generally makes it look like you have a federal building in your pocket.

I used the Treo 600 for 2 years, and I loved it. But if the industry wants me to part with another $500-$700 for a new PDA phone, it has to be a significant upgrade compared to the 2.5" low-res, GPRS-connected Treo. I happen to believe that replacing a gadget with another one with similar specs is retarded.

So VZW is passing off the Treo 700w as revolutionary. Sure, it has EVDO, but EVDO on a 2.5" screen? That's like running a VGA CRT on a GeForce 7800 video card.

Give me the Acer n300 series with 3G, and now you are persuading me to buy from you. Until then, it is back to a slim phone (the RAZR V3C) and an iPaq hx4700, and I'll keep my $60/month EVDO fee until I can use EVDO on a large VGA screen.

Thin and VGA, with UMTS - that would be an excellent Phone Edition...
