Default Mobile Pipeline Reviews the Dell Axim X51v

http://www.mobilepipeline.com/171000096

"Older Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile operating systems had a lot of "gotchas" that limited the attractiveness of those devices. One that easily comes to mind, for instance, was that all your data and personal settings were lost if the battery drained completely. Dell's new Axim X51v and Windows Mobile 5.0, seeks to put an end to the Windows Mobile "gotchas" of the past and, to a large extent, they succeed. Dell considers the x51v a model refresh, but there are quite a few changes under the hood."

Here's another review of the Axim X51v - it touches on the ups and downs of the X51v from a hardware perspective, as well as a software perspective with the inclusion of Windows Mobile 5.0. And I guess the judgement still remains - if you own an X50v, there probably aren't enough justifiable reasons to upgrade to the X51v. However, if you're hoping to purchase your first Pocket PC or if you've just been meaning to upgrade that old unit of yours, then the X51v remains an excellent choice from a cost/performance perspective.

Couple of questions that I've been wondering about...with the x50v & x51v being so similiar...couldn't a PPCTechs upgrade to 256MB ROM, and my free upgrade to WM2005 due soon, wouldn't that essentially make it a x51v?

I'm not sure if they have that upgrade available, but besides the model number, spec wise they'd be identical right?

Just a thought.

Yes, but you can't get a 256MB ROM upgrade from Pocket PC Techs. If you could, then yes, it'd be a DIY X50v to X51v project. 8)

I don't know if there is a difference in replacing the ROM vs. the RAM. They would have to have the ability to reflash the ROM after the upgrade. The bigger issue is probably cost of the upgrade, since most of their 128
MB upgrades are $200.00, I would guess this would be even more. When you probably be able to get a X51v from Dell for $400 or less within the next few weeks it probably doesn't make sense to pay for an upgrade.
