Philips Rollable Display Parading at IFA 2005
"It seemed to me that Philips has something very interesting to show at their Philips booth. Located in hall 22, Philips offers the visitor a lot of new products from hard disk recorders to HDTV devices, Blue-Ray solutions to prototypes. Only one working device is currently present at the IFA show. Of course I needed to see this one with my own eyes so the search began. Somewhere in a corner one of Philips's demonstrating girls carried it hanging around her neck: Philips' rollable display device. Simply referred to as: "Amazing!" Ultra light and stylishly designed you can carry the rollable device with you wherever you wanna go. The device is very small and it unfolds a large display that is actually larger than the device area."
Earlier in the week, Philips demonstrated its rollable display prototype at the IFA 2005 show. Content can only be displayed in grayscale and QVGA, but it's a concept in the making and we may just end up seeing rollable colour displays in the not-too-distant future. Rollable displays for future Pocket PCs? Yeah, I could do with that. It could help make a pocket-sized device even more pocket-sized, and you can impress your friends too.

I've said this before, I really feel that roll up and flexible screens will revolutionize the mobile market once they are developed to a point that they have colour and acceptable resolution.
There are two things that always seem to be at the top of the list that hold people back from using PDAs. The overall size of the device, and the small screen. Flexible screens solve both those problems.....I just wish they'd hurry up! This article shows a bit of hope though.

I agree. This technology will revolutionize many industries. I'm surprised I'm actually seeing it right now. I thought it would be years!
What I would like to see: childrens textbooks put into digital format. Unfortunately, I see them 'losing' their rollout display and I don't see test scores improving either :cry:

But at least it should lighten the load of their school bags significantly. I feel pity looking at children with a huge bags on their backs, looking as if they're going to topple over any second.

Totally OT, but there is one school district here that has banned those big backpacks. There was too much stuff going back and forth that didn't need to be. They have limited the kids to one binder, the zippered kind preferably, and lunch. They are providing two sets of text books, one for at school, which I presume stays in the classroom, and one set for home. There are, of course, arguments for and against, but it should at least reduce the theft rate of electronics, and possible change the focus of kids iin classes. Might reduce the instance of shoulder and back problems as well.

Well, what about the practical aspect of these things?
How do you write on the screen if it's rollable?
According the the linked page, Panel thickness: 100 micro mm (I suppose they mean microns?! what's that one tenth of a mm?!)
Anyway from what I see on the picture of the back, there is nothing to rigidify the screen, just a mechanism to hold the 2 extending parts together.
So I don't see these things in touch screen PDAs before 2008 AND they're gonna have to fix the rigidity problem 8O.

Yes, but that's probably a pretty wealthy school district. They would NEVER have 2 sets of text books per child in our district. If it's coming out of the district's budget, it will never happen. I even had a hard time imagining the district's textbooks suppliers digitizing their books. It's such a monopoly, it's not even funny. But if a child's parents could pay say, $300 to buy 'electronic paper', I think people would go for it.
It's unfortunate that we have so much incompetence in our school districts. At least in my neck of the woods. But you get what you pay for and government jobs don't pay well so....
There is so many amazing things that can be done for relatively little money.
