Default Do Not Mess With Detective Paul at MoDaCo

http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=227175

"Mono, Orange and Microsoft arrived early, and set out all of the stuff for the event... including the raffle prizes. The prizes were, foolishly it seems, laid out in the corner... footballs, kites, goodies and an SPV C550! We are not entirely sure at which point the phone was stolen... but a number of people witnessed what appeared to be the C550 being wrapped in a cardigan and placed in a bag along with a couple of other items including an Orange football, and a kite that was apparently discarded."

An interesting story on computer sleuthing to recover a stolen phone. Good work on getting the phone recovered. I am not sure I would have been as generous with the penalty as Paul was.

That just goes to show that nothing is safe on the internet.

I can just imagine Cocky thinking. "Ha, Ha, Ha.... I've got an unlocked phone and there's no way for them to find me. They're not suposed to unlock phones so they're accessories, I'm home free!"

Anytime you buy or use someone elses software there's the possibilty that they are tracking you. This is a pretty scary thought but that's the way it is in our internet age.

Don't you just love it when losers like cocky get exposed? Not so cocky now, I suspect. Having my house burgled a few times has given me an almost pathological hatred of thieves so, like Ed, I probably would not be so lenient on the criminal. But otherwise it's a "feelgood" story.

I'm glad to hear they got their phone back.

It amazes me as to what motivates someone to do something so foolish.

One of the members who helped retrieve the phone posted a bit of interesting info on his blog about how they went about tracking the guy down. You can read it here.

I read the blog, which is just incredible. I'm really glad that the thief was found. Anyway, the moral of the story: "don't be ****tarded enough to steal a phone from a community of phone experts."

At least there is some justice in the world, with any luck Orange will decide to press charges against the little thief. Imagine stealing something like that in a crowded room and figuring you would actually get away with it.
