MobileBurn Review Nokia 7710 (Apparently Not for Everybody, but Good)
"Back in late 2003, Nokia introduced the 7700, the first Series 90 device. Series 90 is meant to be a multimedia device platform, and to that end the 7700 had a very large TFT touch screen display, a camera, RealPlayer and music support, a MMC card slot, and a DVB-H digital TV receiver - just to name a few things. But it also had what most of the world considered a major design flaw: side-talking, something it shared with the original Ngage.. . . . The new device, which we are reviewing in this story, shares much with the original 7700, but gets a boost to internal storage (90MB), a new megapixel digital camera, and it loses the side-talking and taco shaped form factor. The question is, can the 7710 make it in the current market? I think we can all safely say that it will never be a huge seller, but will its abilities outweigh its quirks and awkwardness - not to mention its size."
Michael Oryl from MobileBurn has certainly done a thorough job of going over the Nokia 7710. He seems to quite like the half VGA screen, though he finds the 300Mhz processors to be sluggish. Quel surprise there then. ;-) I would quibble with his assertion that a weight of 195g means that it is a 'massive' device though. If you want a decent display then simple physics dictates that the device needs to have a suitable sized screen. Personally I think that mobile TV and better mobile games will help change the perception of a 'correct' screen size and that people will be comfortable with larger sizes in the future. What about you guys? What's your ideal mobile screen size and why?

I wish there would be some small (like HTC Magician) Pocket PC phones with VGA display = 640x480 pixels.
That would be perfect for me.
Nokia 7710 is too heavy and has no Wi-Fi so is big no-no.

I'd love to see that too, but vendors may be considering price and practicality, and consumers would probably be considering battery life. Is VGA on a <3" screen necessary for general consumer use? I know geeks would love it. But for the Average Joe, it may not appeal if battery life has to be sacrificed for it.

The Magician has a 2.8" qvga screen running at 150dpi (more or less).
Given that its a full color display, you're already better than most inkjet printers, add-in sub-pixel addessing and you're better than a laser.
I'd rather see the price drop 20-30% for the same specs than tack-on and extra 20% for the vga screen.
Cool specs are fun to talk about but ,other than cost, vga on a screen that size buys nothing.
(Unless you're a doctor watching x-rays on it, in which case, never mind...) :devilboy:

Actually, IMHO the average Joe needs more than that. We geeks can get along with 100-150 DPI, but the average user will need 300DPI or more (300 DPI being inkjet quality, 600-2400 DPI being laser quality)
I have an e-book reader on my Samsung i700, but I hardly use it. It's too hard to read. The form factor (screen size and shape) is about right, it's just the text quality is too rotten.

Well having posted in these forums already makes you a not-so-average Joe. In other words, welcome to Geekhood.
Granted, I'd love to see killer screens on Pocket PCs, but as sad as it is, these things take time. Vendors need to consider cost, functionality, practicality and performance. I'm sure it won't be long before all devices include VGA screens (and perhaps the high-end devices including SVGA?). Time will tell.
