HP Rumors: hw6500/6700 Release Delayed and More...
Folks, I have direct word from a reliable HP source that the release of the hw6500/6700 is being pushed back to November. While several pre-production units have been created, HP is supposedly extremely wary about repeating the same fiasco caused by their hp6315 PPCPE. Also, just to confirm (or squash) the preconceptions about the OS or wireless capabilities involved, the hw65xx will include WiFi (along with Bluetooth and GPS) and the current plan is to launch with Windows Mobile 5.0 (Magneto).
In the meantime, two other devices will likely launch before then: the hp6325 and an HP Smartphone (MS-based). The hp6325 will be similar to the hp6315 except it will be manufactured for Cingular users. I'm assuming that they've also improved the overall device reliability, but forgot to ask.
Finally (and slightly OT), I hear the overall mood of the company is getting brighter under new Chief Executive Mark Hurd! We'll just have to wait and see how this impacts their delivery going forward.

Does anyone else see the 240x240 screen as a handicap? For a device of this size VGA is possible or at least 320x320.

EDGE?
Any news if the PDA or smartphone will support EDGE?
I have my doubts that the PDA will support EDGE, especially if it's just a variation on the T-mobile version.
Any ideas?

I think I read somwwhere that it will support EDGE.
But November? That's a pretty extreme delay. I can see a few months late, but six? Unless they decided to add the WiFi from scratch. Then six months would not be impossible. But even then, to add such a major feature so late in the development cycle is also pretty extreme.

Would like to see this resolution at the very least. Definitely a plus to have wifi.
Also, wasn't there an initiative to have a Treo running Windows Mobile? Love the Treo size and saw the pictures comparison a few days ago. The HP device still looks bulky.

Made me smile as I received a postal catalogue from Dabs today telling me all about this!
Even contemplated buying one from then! The I realized that it's made by Hp and wouldn't buy another hp device. Why I'd want to risk having a hp phone I'd never know. They should stick to printers and servers. The only two areas they're still the best at!

Absolutely! I've always thought of it as a step backwards.

I was wondering if the the hp6325 (cingular version of T-mobile 6315) would support EDGE, or if it's simply the same as the 6315

So if WIFI is now on the 6500...What's the difference between the 6500 and the 6700?!? That was the main difference (and a card slot) that we knew of before. This is some COMPLETELY different info than we have heard repeatedly over the last few months.
It makes sense, though, that HP would wait until Magneto could be installed. That they would put WM2003 on it from previous reports sounded ridiculous, especially in light of the past week.

Good question.
I wasn't specific enough in my questions to deduce if one or both models would support WiFi (wasn't actually thinking of both models when the conversation came up).
I can only vouche that I heard at least one of the two models will support it. I brought it up b/c there had been some rumblings of it not being supported.
