SyChip Provides 11g Connectivity for Mobile Devices "SyChip today introduced its WLAN 6100EB Embedded Module providing IEEE 802.11g connectivity for handheld mobile devices including smartphones, feature phones, PDAs, gaming devices and media players. SyChips WLAN 6100EB offers an industry-leading IEEE 802.11g feature set optimized for mobile handheld devices through advanced power save functions, security capability and physical form factor. Additional benefits of the 6100EB include broad support for leading handheld Operating Systems including Nucleus, REX, Palm, Linux and Windows Mobile; a very low profile package (1.7mm) and small footprint (12x15mm) for space-constrained applications."

SyChip have just announced the 6100EB, a low-power 802.11g CSM which consumes less than 500 micro-amps in power save mode. It includes IEEE802.11i security, QoS traffic prioritisation and a Bluetooth active signaling interface. The module supports CompactFlash, Serial Programmable Interface (SPI) and SDIO, all in the one package. The press release can be found here.

Finally! Hopefully this chip will find it's way into PDAs quickly.

Aside from being cool and fast, maybe it will drive down the cost of 802.11b Pocket PCs. I could see lower-end Pocket PCs with b and higher-end Pocket PCs with g. |

with wireless routers and access point costing less than 100 euro, I am not sure why would someone who can afford a PDA cannot afford one already

I know many people who have purchased PDAs by laboriously saving up over many months/years, even if it meant putting off other purchases just so they could get what they want. Money doesn't grow on trees these days. |
