Default Pocket PC Techs Now Offering Axim X50v 128MB Upgrade

http://www.pocketpctechs.com/detail...=D50-064-128RAM

"Upgrade your Dell Axim X50v series internal RAM from 64MB to 128MB with our upgrade service. During the upgrade process we remove the existing 64MB and install 128MB. This memory upgrade does NOT require our proprietary driver and is fully recognized by the OS (125.74MB Available). This unit uses low voltage hi-speed BGA memory, so stacking is not available and 128MB will be the maximum capacity."

It's $199 for those of you willing to spend the money and void your warranty. I'm sure one of you hard-core types are going to order this nevertheless...

If anyone does get this upgrade, please report on the differences in performance before and after (and do benchmarks if at all possible). A memory upgrade just might convince me to get one. And the cool thing is, an X50v with 128 MB of RAM is barely more expensive than an hx4700.

All handheld models have a certain percentage of defective units, but judging by the number of complaints at aximsite.com, Dell's quality control appears inferior to HP's (at least as far as the hx4700 goes). So, I'm less inclined to void my X50v's warranty than my hx4700's. That said, I'm not about to upgrade the hx4700 either at that price.

Personally, with installing everything but today plugins and PI to the Built-In Storage, I don't feel (at this point) that I need more RAM. But I don't do GPS stuff, which is apparently one of the bigger RAM hogs.

At the price of the 4700, it should have come with 128M of RAM. I've been pretty impressed with my X50. The only thing I think I might have liked is more RAM, and maybe the two extra buttons my X30 has. Here is the RAM anyway. I've submitted my order. I've had a PPCTechs upgrade before, though it did not result in a native upgrade. The 64M RAMDisk in my 4155 has been super. My only fear is that this native upgrade will just provide 64M more of RAM for the OS to mis-manage. Guess we'll see. Should get my instruction e-mail today.

According to Judie from The Gadgeteer.com who go the memory upgrade for her 4700, over 90MB is available to you after the upgrade.

Here is her review of the upgrade.

Good luck with the upgrade and let us know how it goes.

Hi Lex,

Sorry for the delay in replying. We've released several new products and upgrades in the last couple of weeks and are overwhelmed by the response.

What can I help you with?
