Where In The World Is Carlo Guerrero?
Our friendly neighbourhood Windows Mobile specialist / photographer Carlo Guerrero has been travelling, and lucky for us he did bring a camera. First of all Carlo went to an exhibit in Hong Kong, where he didn't find any Windows Mobile devices but did see several nifty gadgets including two nice Windows CE.net mobile devices in the HPC and Tablet form factor. Next Carlo travelled to China, where he spent some time on the China High-Tech Fair featuring all kinds of technology, among which mobile devices. On the second day there Carlo saw several Windows Mobile devices we've reported on before (including the Motorola MPx 220 and MPx and BenQ P50 [hooray!]), but also three new Phone Editions by Lenovo.

The Lenovo AT960 (above) features a swivelling camera, and a lock slider for the buttons. The Lenovo AT560 (below) looks a bit like a large smartphone, but in fact is a Phone Edition. The screen can be flipped so the device can be used in tablet mode as well, which I think is a nice concept. I would be a bit worried about the size of such a device though, knowing the depth of certain flip phones which are smaller in size. Anyhow, there's many more pictures of different devices in Carlo's stories, so if you're interested in learning what is hot and new in Hong Kong and China go read them on PPCW.net.

That AT560 flip phone looks really good - that portrait functionality is a critical piece if they ever hope to get me to buy a smartphone. I'm not a small guy, so the size isn't an issue for me... I currently have a Motorola v400 and a Dell Axim X5 and I am getting annoyed with carrying and managing two devices. However - a single device to replace both would have to be PERFECT:
1. Display is at least 3.7in and VGA resolution
2. Display can be flipped into portrait mode (landscape too)
3. Can turn off phone aspect (to save battery life while at work)
4. Expansion slot (only SD needed, CF a bonus but not req'd)
6. Combo headphone/handsfree jack? Usually they are different sizes, but if they came with a combo stereo headphones/handsfree unit...
7. USB 2.0 connection sure would be nice
8. GPS would just make me drool
Did I mention size isn't really a factor? After that list, it had better not be!
I couldn't find any details on that AT560 device to see if it aligns with my requirements. Even Google doesn't find it - strange....

I strongly second that device. To quote another Thoughts reader, "Standing by with cash"
But to be honest, I love seeing any new Phone Edition devices. It's just inching closer to my convergence unit.

Have to say that it looks a lot better than the MPx - and being able to flip the display must make this a better option than the MPx all round! As you may guess - I am no fan of the MPx! ;-)

I have been looking to "Upgrade" to an HPC device, but after looking around, its actualy going to be a downgrade. What a shame these devices are not available in the western world. Lucky Asians, the get all the cool devices. :P
