Default Verizon Delays 1xEV-DO, CDMA XDA III Rollout

http://www.vzwinfo.com/modules.php?...article&sid=427

"Internal documents from Verizon show that their EV-DO expansion plans called for their next deployments to be full coverage of the Bay Area (San Francisco region) as well as the Sacramento valley. This would have corresponded with the launch of the LG VX8000 and XDA III EV-DO handsets. However, Verizon has decided to halt deployment of EV-DO in both areas, and is considering delaying the launch of both handsets. Verizon cites internally the lack of necessary resources in both tower equipment (shortages in supply), as well as shortage of spectrum necessary to implement EV-DO over the existing 1xRTT network."

I know some of you have been asking about the CDMA XDA III (otherwise known as the HTC Harrier), and here's the scoop from Verizon's side. The one good tidbit is that the article hints that the XDA III could be reprogrammed and use 1xRTT for now. It's unclear whether they would do this, and if so whether it would feature upward upgradeability to 1xEV-DO. I'd definitely want my next Pocket PC phone to support true 3G bandwidths -- that would revolutionize its use. 8) (And for those of you who are on Sprint - I've heard nothing. :|)

This Titan (VZW) has one weekness and that is spectum. VZW just does not have enough. Anytime there is a sale on more spectrum VZW is in on it and the whole Nextel thing had VZW all up in arms because Nextel would be getting spectrum that VZW would love to pay, even top dollar, for.

Rumor is that Sprint is waiting for the ev-do network to come up. Sprint has been taking towers down all over the Pittsburg area the last couple months to upgrade to EV-DO. I'm not sure about the rest on the country but if Pitt is being upgraded surely bigger markets are two.

The website carrying this information is run by an individual and is not associated with Verizon or Sprint or any other company that he writes about (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page). On Howards forum, where this stuff was written is another rumor that Verizon will be expanding EV-DO on 9/27 into 15 more markets, based on somebody's claim of being at a high level meeting.

That's a very good point, although hatoncat (the guy running the site) does have a pretty good reputation. I'll be happy to correct the story if it proves otherwise.
