Chapura PocketCopy Data From Palm to Pocket PC With One Click
Got a Palm and want to upgrade to a Pocket PC, but worried about taking your data with you? Chapura (the makers of the main Palm to Outlook syncing software) have announced PocketCopy, a one-way solution to migrate Palm Desktop records to Microsoft Outlook and Geekzone have the details:
"Chapura PocketCopy is a solution for copying Palm Desktop Software records from the Address Book, Date Book, To Do List and Memo Pad to Microsoft Outlook Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes. PocketCopy offers a one-way transfer of data for customers no longer needing the Palm Desktop Software to manage personal information and wanting to have that information in Outlook instead. The software is also useful if users are planning to migrate from Palm OS to Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Smartphone devices."
You can visti the Chapura website for more details. The application is $19.95 US and there's no trial version, as logically this should be a one shot deal. PocketCopy is designed to perform a 1-way, 1-time transfer of data from the Palm Desktop into Outlook and is not designed to keep data synchronized in both places. Anything that makes life simpler for Palm users to come over to the sunny side of the street is to be welcomed. The more the merrier. 8)

Very nice, I'll have to keep this in mind next time someone asks me the easiest way to migrate from Palm to PPC.

Well 19.95$ for an application you will in theory only use once is pretty expensive also considering that its fairly simple to do it for free

Well, what they are selling is the simplicity. Most PPC power users would have no problems helping someone do this manually, but not everyone has a spare PPCT reader lying around. They obviously see that there is a market for this and good luck to them. Nice to have a 'turnkey' solution for this commonly needed operation.
Interesting as well that this is a Palm orientated company helping people migrate away from the platform...

I've never migrated Palm data to PPC, so what steps would you take to do this manually?

The way I did it was to use Chapura's Pocket Mirror that comes with the Palm to sync to Outlook, then just use ActiveSync to go from Outlook to PPC. The PIM data is easy to move, the hard part is getting and learning new apps to do the extra stuff.

Bingo, that's how I did it as well. Not exactly hard.

Be aware that Pocket Mirror doesn't ship with the newer Palm units (T3, Z72, Z31) because Palm has written their own Outlook conduit. But it should work the same - just change the sync to Outlook (there is even a switcher program on the CD) and then install Active Sync.
Not sure why Chapura would release such a product BTW. I see no real value - certainly not $19.95 worth!

Sure there is. I've heard quite a few queries from people whose Palm died and they want to move to Pocket PC - except they've been syncing to Palm Desktop. You can manually export/import, but it's a lot more work.

Maybe that was not clear to some. This moves data from Palm Desktop to Outlook, not from the Palm device to Outlook like pocket Mirror. If your Palm device dies and you are looking for a replacement and choose a PPC, this will save you some effort.
