pt on overclocking your pocket pc
pt has started a weekly column over at Engadget consisting of straightforward "how-to" instructions to do cool things with a number of different devices. This week, he's written up a short article on overclocking your Pocket PC.
"Okay, were moving the "How-to's" to Tuesday, why? To compete with American Idol of course. This weeks how-to is how to overclock your Pocket PC. Why would you want to do this? speeeeed of course, up to 50% faster in some cases, but you can also (in theory) get better battery life and better performance if you underclock your device when you dont need all the speed and overclock when you do. There are many different tools and articles that really dive in to the specific results on Pocket PC models; we have links to those at the end of this article. This how-to is to just get you up and running quickly, literally."
As always, pt has a very straightforward, engaging style. If you've been interested in overclocking, you might want to give this article a read. Of course, remember that overclocking your Pocket PC is at your own risk; it may void your warranty and may cause damage if you're not careful.

during the days of my ppc 2002 i wanted to run a those old console emulator programs. I suppose this overclocking will greatly improve the gameplay on those programs.

About Battery Life. According to my tests, if you underclock your device and you dont run any application that loads the CPU less the 20% you will decrease the battery life. If you underclock and while you are running an application with more than 20% you will get more battery life.
Reading an ebook the cpu load is less than 20% so you wont get more battery in this case. Playing WMP you are loading your CPU around 20% and you will get around 1.06% more battery life at 200 MHz than at 400 MHz.
I posted these tests a long time ago here

Im glad that PT mentioned it in his wonderful how to

I have a hard enough time keeping my PDA's functional at times. Overclocking is a bad thing to do. It puts unnecessary strain on your device. I will leave this to pt. He may have an unlimted supply of funds, but I don't.
Underclocking is not a bad thing though and I would be a little interested to try that to extend battery life.

Agreed, I've been overclocking for a while as well. No problems at all, apart from a hard reset at the beginning when I was testing and set an invalid speed combination.
