Palm OS Colbalt simulator: My thoughts
Palm has released new simulators to allow freeloaders *Cough* Developers to get a taste of the new OS. Some things in OS Colbalt (Henceforth named OS6) are neat, and some bizarre.
First impressions
When I started up the simulator for the first time, I saw a pretty "Palm Powered" logo for a few seconds, then a not-so-pretty "Palm OS Loading" logo for a few MINUTES. (This is seen during EVERY soft reset) Oops. If this is included in the final product, then
Actual Use
The basic OS is nice, with a cool looking status bar, soft screen. and hme buttion that are very PPC like. Tap on the time in the status bar, and a little window shows the time in bigger letters, and nothing else. Useless. A little button in the corner in the little window takes you to clock settings. Operation is similar in all other status bar icons. Stats bar icons do not dissapper when not needed, unlike PPC. I could find no evidence of multitasking in the OS. :?:
Applications
Address book was the only PIM app that impressed me. It lets each name have three "Personas" Buisness, Personal, and Other with seperate phone numbers, addredded, etc. Rather reminds me of the Newton's "Owner Info" application. All other apps are the same. Note pad is gone, and Memo Pad STILL has no drawing. No multiple catagorizing is avaliable. Dat book looks slightly different, but has no different features, and is actually scaled back from the T|T3 and T|E versions. Palm web pro is now called "Internet", Versamail now called "Mobile Mail" and Real/Kinoma replaced with Media Player.
Conclusion
If Palm is not making any changes, than I believe OS6 is a dissapointment. If you want, get the simulator at www.palmsource.com. Yow have to register. :|
