Default 1GB SD Cards Officially Shipping

http://news.com.com/2110-1041_3-514...art=dtx&tag=nhl

I know some of you have been waiting for this moment...

"Removable flash memory maker SanDisk announced Tuesday it is shipping a 1GB Secure Digital card. The card costs $499.99 and can store more than 30 hours of compressed digital audio, according to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company. The card uses a "stackable" packaging technology that SanDisk worked on with Sharp."

$499 is a bit expensive, admittedly, although you should be able to get it cheaper at distributors; Tek n Toys, for example, is selling it for $405. [Affiliate]

WOW, perhaps the 512mb cards will get down to the sweet spot and become more affordable now, like 256mb are, considering the 2gig SD prototypes are already out.

You can get it for just over $383 from eCost: http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=354542

It's hard to believe that just 3 years ago it cost me $500 for a 1GB microdrive, and now we have solid-state memory for much less than that.

The price on 512 cards has already started to move, we have a 512 SD card $139 and you might also check Costco, they have some good deals as well on SD.

If you're going to look at Costco, you'll need to look under digital cameras, not PDA's for sd cards (512 MB $159)

So two 512 cards would cost me about $280 and one one gig card would cost me $380? Am I missing something here?

Single higher-capacity cards will ALWAYS cost more than two smaller cards.

Nice - I do like these periodic stock-takes where we stand back and see how much storage we can now get into our PPCs for the same price.

If it were just 2x + $50, I would seriously consider getting the 1GB card.
