Touch Password Protection 1.1 Dresses Up Password Protection
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=12215
"This program will replace the default Password security to the new Touch Password Protection. Then it works like the default one: restrict the access to your Pocket PC both in the device and via ActiveSync connection."

Items you can display: Fullscreen background (you can use your own) Calendar, time, battery, memory information Outlook appointments, plans and tasks Phone calls and SMS (on Phone Edition devices)
Be absolutely sure you remove standard Pocket PC password protection before even installing this app or you could be forced to do a hard reset since this screen will cover the password entry screen. There is a fully functional trial. It costs $11.25. I couldn't find any info on what Pocket PC versions are supported.

On PocketGear it says that it supports PPC2002 and WM2003. Good advice regarding removing password before installation - shame it cant be a little more error friendly and detect password set and halt installation - need to make these things idiot proof if possible!

I stumbled across a program called "Nice Start" which looks equally as interesting. It may be worth a look as well. Check out http://www.trancreative.com/nicestart.aspx for more information.
Here is a screenshot from their website:

In addition, I wanted to use it to lock my PPC whilst I'm away from my desk, without having to turn it off. However, due to a problem they've found with it locking the PPC if a popup appointment occurs, this is no longer possible. In order to get Nice Start to display you have to turn the PPC off an on again. See their forum for discussion (and evidence of the speed of response).

My big problem with Pocket PCs is the touch screen becomes active when appointments and incoming messages occur. If the device is rattling against something in my bag or pocket, it will never turn off, it will change the time, appts, contacts. annoying!
A program like these could fix this for me. It would need three changes.
1) The entry code should be easy, four presses is fine but the resolution must be such that I don't have to look at the device. Each corner in some sequence would work.
2) Most important: It can't start a "siren" when the input fails. How annoying to have a siren go off while the phone is in your pocket!
3) it'd be great if the program sent a VK_OFF after three failed attempts, automatically turning itself off and saving battery life (in my usage of the product).
I'd pay for these programs with just those mods.

A case usually sorts that out and reduces the risk of scratching too - I never have these problems as the screen doesnt get pressed unless I want it to.

A good idea for those with nimble fingers.
But I want to be able to glance at the screen and quickly see my calendar and messages, date/time etc. I also want to one handed dial, etc. I don't have nimble fingers.
And yes, my screen is quite scratched, but it works fine :-)

The advertisements in the top right are Macromedia flash. On the plus side, if you don't load Flash, you can't read their ads!

Touch Password Protection 2.0. + Touch Activities freeware
I can announce, that I just uploaded Touch Password Protection to 2.0. version. Fixes and more features, better messages and events collection.
Plus I give a freeware: Touch Activities as the Today Screen item. It looks like the above one.

And web page with descriptions and screenshots:
