A week of hell
Well... a week of hell might be too harsh, but...
Sometimes I leave my desktop running the whole day. Did so last Friday. Late evening, came home to the smell of freshly burnt electronic components. My aged monitor on the table sat silent, dead. Panicked, tried to power it up again only to be treated to a mini firework within the monitor casing (yeah, I know, shouldn't do that). Managed to borrow a friend's monitor for a couple of hours while he went out for dinner. Set up VNC on the desktop and Pocket PC. Remote display the desktop screen on the Pocket PC through wireless LAN.
As you can imagine, going from 15" display area to 3.8" display area isn't exactly exciting, although under different circumstances it might have seemed cool. Web browsing became an exercise in multiple dimension scrolling and a test of patience. Overlayed video doesn't work of course, but then again switching off overlay mode isn't much of a good idea, since even at 640x480 resolution, the system is struggling to update the screen.
Shopped around for a TFT monitor, found a cheap one with dual inputs, proceeded to order online. It was weekend and delivery took a little longer than expected, but to cut the story short...
It arrived today. Going from 3.8" display area to 15" display area again is like a man dying of thirst in desert stumbling upon an oasis, a gasping fish being dropped in the ocean. The feeling of having a large display area on the eyes is almost... intoxicating...
Through this episode, I learnt to appreciate sites that have pages formatted for the Pocket PC screen. Pocket PC Thoughts is my most oft visited site for the past week, my salvation.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll get back to feasting my eyes on the new screen...
