Default Crazy laptop

My IBM thinkpad 600 has a strange problem. Anytime I shut off the laptop it will not power back on without I press the reset button on the motherboard. Even if I pull the battery and unplug the AC cord, it still will not power up after a shutdown. (Thinking it was getting surge from something)If I turn it off and right back on, it will come on. If I leave it off for several hours it will not power back up.

Anyway, the only way I can use it is not turn it off. It goes into standby mode and waits for me to open the lid and start. I checked it and it well keep for hours if I have to take it somewhere.

My question is, is there any harm in carrying my laptop around in the case with it asleep and not turned off?? I made sure it was supposed to power down the HD after 5 minutes of inactivity.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem?

I am confused. :?

Thanks
