Default First Impressions of the ACER C102i

http://www.tabletpctalk.com/pictures/acer_c102i.html

Acer is a naughty, naughty company - the official Tablet PC launch isn't until November 7th, and the OEMs were asked to hold of from selling their devices until that point - looks like Acer didn't get that email. Tablet PC Talk (now with a new look) has a great article from someone who has one of these hot new devices. I don't use the term "hot" lightly - the Acer device is gorgeous, light, and has some solid specs. Every time I see a Tablet PC demo I get excited - now I just have to find an OEM willing to send me one...

"The experience probably has to begin when I first saw pictures of Microsofts prototype. It sparked a curiosity. It sparked a longing to use a pen with my computer properly this time. Since then, I have been following closely; looking for news, etc and I came across tabletpctalk.com which has been a great repository for information. When I heard that Acer had quietly released these product a month early I had to beg and plead to get a machine sent to me."

"It arrived at the end of last week at my local Compusmart in Victoria. When I arrived, there was a buzz in the air as everyone had heard that there was a Tablet PC in the store. Several floor staff wanted to play with the machine before I bought it but somehow the seals were all intact when I got my hands on the box. After getting home I cracked open the box and got to playing. Here are some impressions..."

Default Acer Tablet

Hi Jason,

These are a great device... they have been popular for us in the few days we have been carrying them. We have a good relationship with Acer - I'll see if we can work that relationship to get you a demo unit...

They definitely did not get the email: I went to a "sneak" preview today and two people in the audience had them...

Let me tell you something, when I first saw Pocket PC's I thought to myself: what a great way to revolutionize the education industry (portable text books in electronic format)...

When I played with the Tablet PC today, I thought to myself: wrong, this will revolutionize the education industry (Not only the ability to read portable text books full screen, but to highlight and make notes)...

Think about it, extrapolate, and this could be a killer system for alot of industries...Very cool!

I actually came home and told my wife "It's a great time to be a geek"...

Just my .02

I think these things could be cool for the home as well. Everybody is talking about media convergance with a PC in your home entertainment center. Well forget that, use my TV for video, and give me the convergance in a Table PC. Just imagine, sitting on the couch, and seeing extra info about what your watching on your Tablet PC. I've tried it with my PocketPC, but the real estate just isn't there. The Tablet PC has it.

Now if I can just win one at our launch in a few weeks.

Default NEEDs higher resolution...

Hi All,

Until the TabletPC has a higher resoultion than 1024x768, my money will probably stay in my pocket. I've been using 1400x1050 for the last few years and this is now the minimum resolution (even on a smaller screen) I would ever consider (well 1280x1024 at a pinch).

For reading documents on a small screen you NEED the extra pixels to make the text clear enough to read without eye strain. I'd like a device with a 12" screen at 1600x1200 ;-)

But if they ever release such a device... stand back 'cause I'm getting to the front of the queue!

My 2c

I'm pretty confident in saying that you're in the minority here. 1280 x 1024 is as small as I'd go on my 17" LCD screens, and you want that on a 12" screen? It would take a telescope just to find the test! I think more people would have eye strain in looking at tiny text than larger text that was slightly less crisp. Maybe that's just me, but I'm comfortable with the 1024 x 768 resolution on my 14" laptop screen. Though 1280 x 1024 would be nice. 8)

There's a link off that site to InfoCater. They have a wmv with someone demonstrating the Acer here: http://www.infocater.com/tpc_acer100.shtml

Jason,

What is it with everyone relating screen resolution to text size :?: ... There is nothing to say the text needs to be physically smaller, but with twice as many pixels making up each letter (together with cleartype) the text will be much more readable - almost approaching reading a printed page.

Try reading a PDF (or similar) at full page (rotated to fill the lcd) at 1024x768!
