Default Proporta iPAQ Aluminium Case

http://www.tekguru.co.uk/PPC_Reviews/proporta/index.htm

The Tekguru takes a look at this aluminum case for the iPAQ - he seems to like it quite a bit! Our very own Andy Sjostrom will also be posting his own review soon, so watch for it!

"The latest models of Compaq (HP) iPAQs come supplied with a basic sleeve which serves to protect the machine from everyday knocks and scratches. This case is constructed from plastic and rubber and although is does serve it's function over time the rubber 'wings' can come adrift rendering the case useless and it will not protect against impact from heavy objects. The need for greater protection has been addressed by Proporta who have developed the iPAQ Aluminium Case which serves as a basic sleeve replacement."

This case is all well and fine for what it does, but what about a sleeve attachment that works with Expansion sleeves? The Naked iPaq just doesn't have the functionality I need. Does anyone know if the New Anodized Aluminium protective covers by Pocket Solutions is going to address this issue?

Right now I'm waiting to see what the screen looks like on the Toshiba e550g before making a decision on the iPaq. Pocket Solutions will have an Anodized Aluminium cover for it and it has dual expansion slots, so if the screen is even remotely close, I'll have to go with the e550g. The protective cover is a major concern for me since I like to leave my screen naked. (I'm a Jornada user what can I say)

I am impressed with this case. I was going to pick one up until I saw that you can't sync in the cradle with the case on. Apparently the material used is slightly thicker than the sleeves so it won't fit all the way.

Too bad. Here's hoping for version 2.

I also had a chance to look that this product and was also very impressed with it. I also noted the sync cradle issue which is also something I don't like, but maybe this is just a sign I need to buy a USB sync cable  . But other then that I have been using mine since the time I got it.

My complete review is available here:

Default damn cradle

I was just about ready to go out and buy one of these after I read your review...... until I got to the part about it not being able to fit in the cradle. It would be too much of a pain to take it out all of the time.

It is a draw back, but it is really getting my thinking that a sync cable might be better (for me) then the cradle. I often am using my device and always plug it in to the AC, not via my cradle. So in some cases, that fault wouldn't be a problem. Proporta has also been doing sync/power cables for some devices, so this could be a slight marketing ploy to get you to buy both the case and the cable.

Default can't use an expansion pack, you can't use a SS2 either

I had written to these folks, and they informed me that they do not support/accomodate the SilverSlider 2 or any expansion pack while using their case.

How come companies don't get it, that "naked" ipaq spells half a solution?

How come they can't come up with cases that accomodate the expansion packs/silver sliders?

well, one more case I won't be buying anytime soon

It is only half a solution if you require the expansion packs all the time. For day to day tasks, I don't need my expansion packs and if I had a 3800/3900 with the built in SD, I wouldn't even need it in my car.

The best cases for expansions include the expansion in them. It would be cool if Proporta would put out another case that included an CF slot on it, but I don't think this style case would be good for "accomidating an expansion."

Default I wholeheartedly disagree

Half a solution in that, to use a GPS solution, you have to buy an expansion pack

to use a CF card, you have to buy an expansion pack

To use a microdrive (1Gig at least) you have to buy an expansion pack

To use a margi card, you have to buy an expansion pack.

These guys don't support expanson packs, so your only choice is to use the built-in SD card slot.

But, I have CF cards. I find them more reliable and cheaper to buy and have larger capacities. i can use my 1 Gig CF microdrive between my Ipaq and a myriad of devices including my digital camera and my PC.

I think accomodating an expansion pack is a good thing, my piel frama case does. How come more hard cases don't?
