Default Toshiba e310

http://www.pocketpcitalia.com/recensioni/hardware/e310.asp

Good news travels fast. Through Mobigeeks I found a full preview of the Toshiba e310 on Pocket PC Italia.com (Google Autotranslation, thanks to Todd Ogasawara for the link), with pictures and a side-by-side to a Compaq iPAQ 3600 series. Before you see the specs and complain about it only having a StrongARM 206 MHz processor, and 32 MB of RAM, I'd like to point out to you that this is an entry level product. This is not aimed at the top of the market, but at the bottom. With the very small size of this thing (look at those pictures!), and the SRP of $399 Cnet quoted, this might do very well!

UPDATE: From the Microsoft Mobility Virtual Press Centre comes an 'official' picture of the device.

Next to that according to the press release: "Other features include a standard Secure Digital (SD) expansion slot to increase on-board memory of 32 MB to 288 MB or allow cable-free connectivity with a SD Bluetooth card to other mobile devices and the Internet. " So that would mean this would be it would contain a SDIO slot, unlike for instance the iPAQ.

And it is aimed at the entry level customers market: "In addition to the expansion capability, the super thin Toshiba Pocket PC e310 is the ideal handheld for the entry-level customer. With the Microsoft Windows Media Player 8, users can enjoy their favourite MP3 files through a rich, stereo sound system. Customers can enjoy viewing video files, presentations and e-mail on the crisp, vibrant, 64K-colour display. Other multimedia features include digital voice recording, microphone and stereo headphone jack."

Man, I just posted this news on PDABuzz! Got here and Marlof found out about it as well!

It's looks INCREDIBLY thin and the case looks like metal (how do you say metal in Italian?) "metallic auto body" sounds like it IS metal (metallic = metal?). 10 hours battery life isn't bad considering the form factor. Bummer part is the 206 MHz StrongARM, I really hope x-scale is what shows up in the U.S.... Looks really 'professional' and solid -- kind of like the T series Clies.

Is this a retail device, or a 'corporate' only device?

Take1: if you see the update I put online just now (linking to the press release), you'll say it's entirely aimed at the entry-level customers market!

Saw it Thanks! Too much of an eager beaver. $399 -- What's Palm gonna do now? This thing's gonna make the m515 priced equally look like a rip-off considering all the features packed into the e-310.

I love it!

Wow, finally a really solid little PPC coming in at $399.

Can't wait to see their high-end X-Scale model!!!

wish it could have hit the 300 mark like the Audiovox did (considering how much the Vox had dual slots and such) I know don't flame 399 is definitely a step towards making PPC's mainstream and that's a great thing!!!

I wonder if we can expect compatibility with the Palm/Panosonic Bluetooth SD card?

It looks like it's features and price are designed to compete directly with the Palm M515. From that perspective its priced right. From a current Pocket PC perspective the 32 MB RAM limitation and lack of CompactFlash support is a concern and makes me wonder whether it is still priced too high. I really think the high end for a "consumer" device is $300, with the sweet spot being around $200.

If the e310 is designed to be the PPC answer to the Palm M515, I wonder how aggressive Toshiba will be to compete with Palm and match their price drops that will inevitably happen.

The biggest question about this Pocket PC will be whether the battery life is better than the e570. Another interesting question will be whether Audiovox will be selling a version as well.. I'm thinking that they won't.

I got my ipaq 3765 in december new for $250. hotdealz.com has some good tricks sometimes. I think $400 is still too much to pay for a pocket pc. though I wouldn't mind dropping a grand for OQO pc on the main page.
