Default Powered subwoofer?

I'm looking for a small, powered sub-woofer to hook up to my existing stereo system. The current one I'm using (from a set of computer speakers) has a buzz I don't like.

I'm having a heck of a hard time finding something small & relatively inexpensive though - any advice?

Depends what you mean by "small & relatively inexpensive". ACI has a neat smallish sub called the Quake, which they are discontinuing, so good deals may be available. They sell factory-direct and their service is excellent: http://www.audioc.com.

Otherwise check out the cheaper end of the Cambridge SoundWorks line available at http://www.hifi.com.

I'll have a think about what else I can suggest.

Default How cheap?

Based on an article I read somewhere, I bought a cheapie KLH 10" powered sub at Costco for $69. Then I bought a concrete stepping stone to place it on. Then I popped it open and stuffed in more insulation material (foam). Man, what a difference!

One of the problems with cheap subs is they have lousy acoustics, that is, they don't push the sound out, rather it just kinda falls out. With the foam and concrete slab, the sound is forced into the room.

I'm not saying it's going to match the response, timber, tone, etc, of a $600 sub, but heck, it was only $69 plus $4 for the stepping stone. I used foam from a packing crate at work. Man am I cheap or what?

(Actually my wife wouldn't let me spend more, she wanted to buy food or something silly like that...imagine that!)
