Default Record HDTV via Firewire in MCE

http://www.thenears.com/archives/165/

"Looks like this has been around for a while now, but something I just stumbled upon again today and thought I should mention it here. This hack will allow you to record HDTV or SDTV signals off of the firewire port in your set-top box. Reading the included docs, it looks like its actually a parallel recording process that then wraps itself in dvr-ms and plugs in the metadata from the analog recording that it is recording in parallel."

I actually stumbled across this myself a few weeks ago when I got my new Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR box from Time Warner. It looks relatively simple, and the ability to record HD signals to an MCE PC is unprecedented. Hopefully manufacturers will start to incorporate features like this into the hardware right out of the box. Some sort of digital set top box is going to be necessary to use digital cable, which most people have. Hacks like this are going to be the only way to access that digital feed, unless something changes. CableCARD sure isn't looking like a promising answer. :?
