Default Samsung Develops First Truly Double-sided LCD

http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/PressRelease/PressRelease.asp?seq=20070104_0000309294#

"Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world's largest provider of thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels announced today that it has created the first LCD panel that can produce independent images on each side of a mobile LCD display. Samsung's new double-sided LCD can show two entirely different pictures or sets of visual data simultaneously on the front and back of the same screen. Other conventional double-sided LCDs can only show a reverse image of the same video data. This new development will replace two display panels with one, thereby reducing overall thickness of mobile products by at least 1mm."

Wow, not only will we get slimmer form-factor but also a big external screen. Just think about the possibilities, now those media player buttons on the front panel can not only control the music but the screen will complement it by showing the album art along with the track info. Not sure if a certain person would like this idea though. ;-) More pictures available over here.

very cool - there are so many possibilities for this tech. I hope we can see it in a device soon and not 5 years from now. :?

If you buy stock, Samsung would be a company to watch closely over the next few years.

They will be setting the pace. Perhaps the new "Nokia" for the US?

I wish HTC stock was traded on the US exchange. :-(

Samsung, I thought was a good stock few years ago when they were doing quite well against Sony in the consumer market. They were launching products pretty quickly, six month launch period. Somewhere between then and now, they have lost their momentum; at least to me it seems that way.

While they are good at innovation and they dabble with a lot of products, they still haven't made an impression with a single product. Maybe I am being too critical.

Getting back on topic, the dual LCD screen is exciting and I hope it is not a battery guzzler.

I wonder if the folks at Microsoft are keeping this in mind for the future versions of the OS. It almost seems like with the dual screen, you can have two home screens. The external one can be your main and permanent home screen. The internal one can probably change based on the application.
