Default Cingular Shutting Down AT&Ts UMTS Network Until Next Year

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000183063806/

"It doesnt get talked about much these days, but before getting snapped up by Cingular AT&T Wireless actually introduced high-speed UMTS wireless service in a handful of cities (Seattle, the SF Bay Area, Phoenix, and Detroit). The phones bit and the download speeds were disappointing (especially compared with Verizons EV-DO service), so it wasnt exactly a shock that Cingular ended up putting the rest of AT&T Wireless planned rollout on ice after the merger."

I for one am looking forward to the HSDPA network which will of course be faster. Cingular might be bringing up the rear with regard to Verizon but I think they will catch up. I have read that some of the delay for HSDPA might be due to lack of handsets that can take advantage of it. I'm inclined to believe that has been the case. It is clear by looking at what is coming down the pipe, lots of new devices are on the way.
