There is one picture that I mistakenly snapped at a res of 1024x768 using my old Canon G1. It turns out to be the single best picture I have ever taken. I have printed it out at home in 8x0 format a couple times, and it looks good. (Using your quick method, this has 102.4 ppi.) Anyway, the point of all this, is... I just had it printed using ShutterFly and the result is great. They warned that it is not a supported print size for that picture, however they still managed to do a great job.
Although, I finally got the print out I've been looking for, I have learned my lesson, and I ALWAYS leave the camera on the highest resolution possible.
