Default Noted: The Samsung Galaxy Note

Samsung Galaxy Note by Yuan Sheng, on Flickr

After mucking around with a HD2 on Android for almost a year, which in itself was a vast improvement over the original Motorola Milestone (aka the Droid), I decided to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy Note. It wasn't an easy decision, given the Note's larger-than-average size. Unlike the HD2, which minimised screen bezel size to get a phone that was not much larger, the Galaxy Note is the size of a scientific or financial calculator rather than a phone.

Still, I think the trade-off has been worthwhile, and the AMOLED screen is really great. Blacks are truly black, and at low brightness it's almost like looking at a glossy print rather than a screen. The dual core 1.4 GHz Exynos CPU is zippy, and booting up with the Note is incredibly fast, that I don't mind swapping batteries (previously the slow boot up times on previous Android devices created a bit of a mental block with me with regards to battery swapping). Not that it might need much, that 2500 mAh battery so far is doing a good job at powering the device so far. My first use with a lot of tinkering around lasted 9 hours, with the battery going from 100% to 14%. The HD2 with its skinny 1230 mAh battery would've died around the 6 hour mark.

I don't think I'll be writing a review on this, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me. I'll see what I can do to answer.
