I've tossed all small sensor compacts out of my list of main cameras. There're just too many compromises with them. Like you said, a high-compromise camera doesn't make much sense.
Sony's NEX-7 really looks good for the serious photographer. I am hoping Panasonic does something good with the GH3. The GH series always had a better sensor than the other Micro Four Thirds cameras in its very short history, and I hope it continues.
