What - if anything - is known about the long-term viability of SSDs?

We've had discussions on the forums about the life expectancy of various digital media, and I recently read a very pessimistic article assessing the likely longevity of current storage devices: seems that plain old paper (& esp "acid free" varieties) & photographs may well survive longer than those items we entrust to digital formats...
