There are two things that decides if any gadget will be successfull: What does your friends have and advertising, nothing else matters to any one but us geeks, gadget freaks and new addaptors.
If your friends have Iphones and are showing off with them, then that's what you are going to buy, if they are very pleased with their Android phones you'll want one of those.
If all you see in the comercial breaks are Nokia phones, then you'll most likely look for one of those first, and most of your friends will have them as well, untill one of them shows up with some thing else, that is better at Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and/or gaming experience.
The largest consumer group in the cell/smart phone market are not any of us, but teens and tweens who could care less about the phone, as long as it does texting, music and video well, and has THE killer app of the day, oh, and looks the most flashy ofcourse.
Iphone is doing very well because its the most Bling at the moment, and because it's all over the news, when was the last time you saw CNN repport on a new Windows phone? 75%+ of the end users could care less about if it does multitasking, copy/paste or Excell, they never use it any way.
