I was wondering if you guys could help me. I've been using a Blackberry for
the past four years and have always been pleased. My most recent experience
with the BB 8800 has been huge disappointment so far, and I have decided to
take it back and wait for the 8300 series to roll out. In the mean time I
have been provided with a Cingular 8525 or HTC "Hermes". According to
Cingy's site they do not offer BB Connect for this device, but I found this
article http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS9552076853.html that says
that the 8525 in equipped with BB connect, but obviously not offered from
Cingy. I was wondering you know of any way, or if it's possible to point me
in the correct direction where I may find info on working around Cingy's
restraints, so that I may enjoy a Blackberry-like experience until the new
series is available??? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

At a guess...You are talking about push email.
Blackberries are sent email through BBConnect which polls and collects your email from your original email account.
The hermes supports this through Exchange Servers. So simply ask your work IT guys to set up an Exchange Server account for you or if it is for personal mail. Obtain one through one of many providers.

this does help a bit, but BB connect provides an entire BIS experience. Including BB messenger among otehr things. Are you saying that there's basically no way to work around Cingular making this unavailable?

Are you saying that there's basically no way to work around Cingular making this unavailable? From the site you quoted. "838Pro Pocket PC and the C720W smartphone." I don't think it is simply Cingular but having an appropriate device.
I had to look up BIS and thats the Blackberry Internet Service? Have you tried Pocket Internet Explorer? Opera? Netfront?
Reading this http://business.cingular.com/businesscenter/solutions/email-messaging/email-blackberry.jsp#webmail for the BIS benefits... I fail to see how a pocket PC doesn't satisfy nearly all those requirements. You would need to download and install Adobe or Foxit or Xpdf for PDF viewing but most of that is out of the box functionality.
The pocket PC also has MSN messenger out of the box and other messengers can be installed. I'm sorry but I'm confused. What am I missing?

I've used nothing but Blackberry since entering the smartphone genre, so i'm not very familiar with any other OS. I do use opera on my BB though and enjoy that. Does PIE come with a flash player? Does it support embedded media?
The biggest reason for me wanting BB connect, is to make the swtich from Blackberry to a WM device as smooth as possible for my wife. I figure if some of the features she needs to use are more familiar to hurt, I'll get less calls at work asking me how to do this, and how to do that, lol.

The Pocket PC layout is similar. It was designed so that a Windows user literally could pick up a device and use it from the get go. You're pretty much hooped if you are a MAC user :|
There is a plug-in for flash and please define "embedded media". If you mean a specific website, media type, any other details. The term is rather broad.
PIE does support media stream links and Media player and Core player do have HTML parsing capabilities. Realplayer mobile sucks...
Opera's new 8.x beta can play Youtube files. Youtube mobile is coming out soon. There are on-the-fly conversion websites as well. www.orb.com will let you access your media stored on your home PC and even broadcast tv from your home PC to your PDA. You do need a tv tuner and a seriously good video card with broadband.

Like espn video feeds, and videos listed on Cnet and other sites like that.

I was under the impression that I had the newest version of Opera on my BB. Is the 8.x beta version only for WM5 at this point?

I use Avenu to connect to my home PC. Is this "Orb" better? If so, what does it offer that Avenu doesn't?
and btw, I found an article on wikipedia about the Hermes, and it states that BB connect is available for the device, but myust be activated by the carrier. Is there still no way that you can think of to work around this?

So why not insist that they switch your plan. Convince them like these guys did.

For the sites with media. In media player or tcpmp, input the url and it will automatically find the media stram link and run it.

Media player has a html parser too but TCPMP handles far more codecs.
Opera 8.65 beta not Opera mini. While it does do it...it can be ugly on phone devices that have slower processors. On the fly conversion is probably best.

Then theres the myriad of places for streaming solutions like smarttv and may other mobile media sites.
